The University of Georgia rowing team dominated in the UTC erg sprints competition on Saturday, February 2nd in Chattanooga, Tennessee. No one said it better than the UTC head coach Robert Espethes (former Olympic gold medalist), when he announced over the intercom that "it's pretty obvious that Georgia won team points total," before they were even done totaling team points.
This event was packed with competition as Georgia was pulling against other highly esteemed varsity and club rowing programs such as UTC, GSU, Alabama, UTK, Berry, Vanderbilt, Murray State, and USC. However, UGA came through with a clear victory of 577 total team points. This score was 127 points ahead of UTC, the second runner up, and an impressive 306 points ahead of Alabama, a varsity program that is considered to be our biggest competition.
Several team members earned points for the team while others succeeded in blocking other teams from scoring points. In the Collegiate Novice Women's 2K race, Elizabeth Marsh took first place with a final time of 7:53. Beth Rogers came in close behind with a time of 8:16, securing 4th place for the team. In the collegiate open weight women's 2K race, Megan Kotsko won 2nd place with a time of 7:33.7, Vanessa kemp came in 3rd with a time of 7:51.5, Jessie Barnett (team captain) came in 4th at 7:51.5, and Kelsey Hanks came in 5th with a time of 7:52.9. In the Never-Ever (first season novice) women's race, Abby Dickenson came in first with a time of 8:33.1, Christina Dinh came in third at 8:33.6, Kristin Wallace came in 4th at 8:35.9, and Jane Rowden came in 5th with a time of 8:37.5. The teams own coach, Louie Kirchner, competed in the Collegiate lightweight men's 2K race and the collegiate lightweight men's 500 meter dash and won 2nd in both. Kevin Mara won 1st place in the open weight collegiate men's 2k race and second in the 500 meter dash. Nick Carrea won 5th and 4th place in the open weight 2K race and the 500 meter dash.
