This past weekend, the University of Georgia Rowing club competed in another erg sprint competition. These sprints were held in Atlanta at Georgia Tech's rec sports complex. While the rowers pulled their 2k sprint, they could watch a monitor that had boats racing across the screen telling them what place they were in. Erg sprints are a unique opportunity to compete individually against rivals such as Georgia Tech and Auburn.

UGA had another exceptional showing. Our coxswains represented us well with a first place finish by Jason Wells in the men's division and a 10th place finish by Quynh-Hoa Nguyen in the women's division. The light weight women's category was dominated by UGA rowers with Kathryn Stafford taking 2nd and Vanessa Cook taking 5th. Five of the top ten places were held by UGA rowers. Jamie Lane got 2nd place in the light weight men's category followed by a 6th place finish by Sean Johnston and a strong 8th place finish by Coach Louie. This was most of the novice's first opportunity to show the rowing world what they were made of. The novice women had a strong showing with Megan Kotsko taking 3rd and Katie Schweitzer taking 5th. Seven of the top ten places were taken by UGA women. The novice men's category was won by our very own returning novice, Kevin Mara. Not only did Kevin take first, but he also broke the Atlanta Erg Sprints record in the novice men's category resulting in Kevin taking home the Hammer Award. The open women had strong finishes with Laura Parker getting 3rd and Brooke Powell 5th. Nick Nolan was the only UGA open man competing in the open men's category and came away with a 1st place finish.

It was a great finish overall with many, many personal records. March 3rd will be the next opportunity for UGA to compete. UGA will be hosting a scrimmage with Georgia Tech in Winder at our very own Fort Yargo. Hopefully UGA will continue to dominate our favorite in-state rival.
