The University of Georgia Rowing team competed in its first official regatta on October 14, 2006. The Chattanooga Head race had many competitors such as Georgia Tech and Emory, and varsity programs such as University of Tennessee and University of Alabama all racing in a 5,000 meter race. It was the first race this season for many teams, and first race ever for many of UGA's novice first season rowers.

This regatta was full of many talented teams, with many years experience. However, that didn't stop UGA from pulling through and winning first place in overall team points. According to Woman's Captain Jessie Barnett, "This regatta displays what rowing with a close team is all about- each individual boat's intensity works to build a strong overall finish. A program like ours is unique because it's so well rounded. We all feed off each other. This win motivates us to train even harder to earn another".

Many individual boats placed as well. The Men's Varsity 4+ took 1st place, the Women's Varsity Lightweight 4+ took 2nd, the Lightweight Men's 4+ took 2nd, and the Men's and Women's Varsity 8+ both took 4th. There was also a strong showing in the novice category with the Men's and women's 4+ both taking 2nd, and women's 8+ taking first. Many other boats did well and placed in their respective category.

The next regatta will be varsity only, taking place October 21 and 22 in Boston. The team then comes back south to compete with everyone back in Chattanooga at the Head of the Hooch on November 4th.
